Fungirl

Beatrice, a brilliant but flawed mycology professor, is on the verge of tenure—until a scandal threatens everything. To save her career, she must track down the elusive “purple mushroom,” first discovered by her estranged academic father. Her search leads to a citizen science Fungi Festival, but she doesn’t make the trip alone. What was supposed to be a quick family layover turns into a chaotic road trip, trapping Beatrice in a Prius with her wheelchair-bound father, overbearing mother, flakey younger brother, and quirky 13-year-old neighbor. What begins as a professional quest becomes an emotional reckoning, forcing Beatrice to finally confront the death of her sister and an identity built in her father’s shadow. Through laughter, tears and psychedelic revelation, she learns that finding herself means letting go—and embracing the messy, imperfect love of family.
